Her works in watercolour range from realism to complete abstraction. Always, she simplifies the representational images and focuses on bringing forth light, atmosphere and mood. Ann often uses negative backgrounds to push up the value and create depth. Ann’s acrylic works are usually more abstracted, although the design usually is inspired by an idea or a favoured theme. Often working with plaster, she first sculpts her design and creates texture. Her work is done quickly, instinctively and with total freedom, letting the piece develop spontaneously, using colour and value to create light and depth. Because of the absence of recognizable symbols, the viewer is encouraged to respond, imagine and enjoy his/her own interpretation of the work.
Ann has studied painting, drawing and art history at both the Ottawa School of Art and St. Lawrence College in Brockville, Ontario. She teaches and paints out of her home studio.
