Brian Buckrell retired from academia in Ontario (veterinary medicine and agriculture) in 2001 and relocated, with his wife Cathy, to Comox B.C. on beautiful Vancouver Island. He began painting in 2004. He now paints (or studies painting) full time - in acrylic and oils. His interests are portraiture/figurative and landscape - particularly the great fun and challenge of painting local scenes on-location (plein air). |

He continues to study with accomplished artists in Canada and the USA. He particularly admires the colourful interpretation of the Canadian landscape done by many Canadian artists - past and present. His goal is to be able to capture the magnificence of Canada through his own use of bold colours and strong composition. Brian has won awards for both studio and plein air paintings including first place at the Grand Prix d’ Art Competition (the Qualicum Paint-out) at the Old School House Arts Center Qualicum Beach in 2007 and again in 2008. His paintings have sold locally, in eastern Canada and the eastern and western US. As well, he has donated paintings for several Comox Valley fund raisers. Brian is President of the Comox Valley Chapter of the Federation of Canadian Artists.
