I have spent hours at a time enjoying and analyzing the work, especially while studying with my teacher, Francis Criss, during the late 50's, 60's, early 70's. Every time that I go back to those rooms, that hushed electric presence is there. Work by many painters, radiate that hush: The superstars... Corot, Pissaro, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Seurat, Matisse, Derain, Picasso, Bellini, Rembrant, Van Eyke, Vermeer! and from some prints: the work of Michaelangelo, Piero Della Francesca. It is the monumental, timeless figure's appearing in the work of these painters that has struck me in the heart. Many of the figures are locked in complex, exquisitely designed compositions, and like those great sculptures of Buddha that we may turn a corner and be wonderfully surprised by, evoke an ineffable calm and peace. To try and capture that, is my intent and focus.
