These he expresses through oil-on-canvas, oil-and-tempera and oil bar. Don was born in Seattle but grew up in Taiwan where he acknowledges having gained from Chinese artists his deep appreciation for the beauty and power of a finely executed brush stroke—'a brush ballet', Don calls it.
After moving back to Seattle in the 70’s, it wasn’t until 1994 that he began painting seriously the plein air landscapes of the Northwest. Through frequent visits to museums and galleries, Don has been highly influenced by the works of Monet, Klimt, N.C. Wyeth, Bill Cumming, J.W. Waterhouse and John Singer Sargent. 'It was by studying the works of such artists,' he says, 'that I gained permission to paint freely in my own style'.
In 1999, Don turned to figurative painting which continues to be his focus. With all its subtleties of gesture, variations of expression, drapery, light, shadow and mood, Don describes figurative painting as the perfect context for inviting the magic that can happen when brush is put to canvas. Don lives in Seattle and exhibits his work throughout the Puget Sound region. His portfolio can be viewed at www.donhaggerty.com.
