In the late 1940s, Bert migrated with his wife and eldest son to Canada, settling first in Ontario, and then Vancouver. Bert became fascinated with 'the dramatic tranquility of the west coast', a love that can be seen in his hundreds of beach scenes that were painted on location. Bert also involved his family in his work, often having his two sons and wife pose for his portraits.
Bert's methods and style were as unique as his body of work; an artist who worked only in plein air and alla prima. He preferred to begin a new painting instead of spending time correcting his work. Bert loved riding his bicycle around White Rock, and he took every opportunity to pair his love of the outdoors with his painting. His palette was based solely on seven colors that he combined to create the shades he needed.
Bert lived in White Rock until his death in 1998.
