Elsha Leventis' artist's statement: Since graduating from OCAD, I have been focused on expanding a body of work inspired by my fascination with the intricate landscape of the eye and with what and how we see. My work is informed by many artists, including Jasper Johns, Ken Noland and Ross Bleckner.
Using a limited palette, often ultramarine blue and burnt sienna, I lay down washes of oils diluted with medium on Mylar, and then subtract or drop in more paint to capture light effects such as spots and rays. Initially, I impose control but must soon come to terms with letting go as the paint takes on a life of its own. As the work unfolds, there are interesting and unexpected results, and “mistakes” often lead to exciting new discoveries in technique or process.
My work has appeared at Toronto Art Expo, the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, the Interior Design Show and other venues, as well as in Style at Home and House and Home. Lately, I have been developing a series exploring traffic on highways in oil on canvas.
