Jeanine in Barnes charcoal drawingAgainst the living room walls of his Rondebosch, Cape Town home you can see the signs of painter Gavin Calf’s work. Some paintings, now framed and famed, created in that very room. And earlier splatterings of colours, remainders and reminders from when he created these works. The accidental wall splashings have been put a stop to, though, by Gavin’s life partner, Jeanine, as she charmed him into the studio at the front of the house, to give expression to his passionate creative urges there.
Passionate? That Gavin certainly is. He can hardly restrain himself when he speaks about his work. His face, hands and body movements all intensely reflect his words – when he speaks about this painting or that model; about a St Petersburg visit or an Amsterdam client; about a machine that requires a solid slap to start working again, or about seeing red when he just can’t find that crimson hue he wants, and he wants it... now! It’s at that point, Gavin laughs, that their Border Collie leaves the room: quiet canine censorship of language it does not approve of. Half-hearted art Gavin’s certainly isn’t: on the eve of the new millennium, the magnet-like drawing power of the paint on his life drew him from a three-decade career in graphic design to pursue this passion full-time.
