Ilona Brustad received her BA in English and BFA in painting from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. In 2004, after painting for many years, Ilona began making mosaics for their innovative possibilities. She enjoys experimenting with new materials and textures. Ilona's mosaics are featured in The Mosaic Artists Bible of Techniques and Breakout! The Pathway to Success.
When I took my first mosaic workshop, my response was immediate and intense. I needed to make mosaics. As a painter for twenty years, I had always been charmed by the intense colors of Rouault and the primitive painters of Haiti. Consequently, I found the shift to the color and texture possibilities of mosaics natural and intriguing. Since that first mosaic class I have experimented with a variety of materials including glass, porcelain, stones, beads, found objects, and hand made tiles, to create unique innovative work.
