Katherine Kean paints dramatic landscapes in watercolors and oils to unveil luminous realms. Ocean sprays, rock formations, storm clouds and wild grasses waving in the wind are my starting point. They suggest something powerful and enigmatic, peaceful and permanent, beautiful and unknowable that underlies and animates all that lives. Katherine's goal is to explore this something that is always changing and always present. She likes to suggest this through a refinement of pictorial details and with controlled intensity of light and depth of color. Working slowly Katherine Kean applies multiple layers of paint made translucent with the use of wax, allowing new depths and tones to develop in surprising ways.
