I want what every artists wants. Good design, composition, values and color, brushwork, space, edges, a story to tell, and something I am interested in painting. |
Still life is my favorite thing to paint. I always start with an idea then decide on the title and the story I want to tell. I find the props, set them up with a light source, work out the composition, and make value and color studies before I begin.
What I like most about painting is starting from the beginning and building each level until it is finished. It is parallel to any endeavor or in a broader sense, to living one’s life. You start at the beginning and use concepts you know about from experience or take a chance with an idea you want to try out to see if it helps build a successful work.
When all is going well I try to stay in that parallel universe where from some inner knowing, without words, everything is perfect. It is a feeling of contentment and I can usually hold on to this emotion until I am met head on with a problem. This is where growth happens and I struggle like all artists to find the solutions.
Finishing a painting is always enjoyable not because it is done, but because I get to add the small parts that pull the work together. There is a slight sense of sadness when I finish a painting. That is why half way through the current work I start thinking about the next one, the title, story and so on.
