I am a representational-realist painter, painting in oils. Being a native of Northern Michigan, my love for the outdoors and interest in art has been lifelong. I have a keen sense of simple places and spaces that translates well to my plein air artwork. Painting in plein air is challenging and exhilarating at the same time. When I reflect on the world around me, I find endless inspiration. |
My artistic journey began when I apprenticed with a well-known muralist from New York City. For ten years I honed my skills in layout design and color mixing. My extensive portfolio includes prominent murals at the Breakers Hotel of Palm Beach, Florida, The Plaza Hotel in New York City and the Greenbrier Hotel in West Virginia.
I have translated this reservoir of expertise and background to my current work in oil painting. While refining this form of expression over the past eight years, I have been fortunate to study with some of today's best artists. After working three years with my local mentor Sharon Griffs Tarr, I continued my study with Diane Rath out of Chicago and Scott Christensen in the Tetons. Also, I am a big believer in self-study. Having examined a long lineage of artists, I feel a sense of history when I paint, be it the color of green that Edgar Payne used on his water or the light that streams across a Sorrola painting.
I'm a member of the Great Lakes Plein Air Painters Association and the Plein Air Artists of West Michigan. Because the PAAWM partners with the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy, we have access to Conservancy sites throughout the year. In addition, I am also a member of a figure group that paints weekly.
My work can be viewed in the following galleries-
The Battle Creek Art Center, Battle Creek, MI Cycling Salamander, Charlevoix, MI Gallery 344, Kalamazoo, MI Absolute Gallery, Lansing, MI Stuart Lake Studio, by appointment only, Marshall, MI
