Ballet is a world of beauty, grace and strength. We are thrilled by the athleticism of a male dancer's leaps and moved to tears by the sadness and grace of a Giselle.
I have been a captive of the magic of the ballet since I was very young, but only recently did I feel I had the requisite skills to translate what I saw and deeply felt into paintings and drawings.
This selection of oil paintings and pastels are from the last few years. Multiple transparent oil glazes in the paintings and multiple layers of pastel contribute to their rich color. The works are not meant to literally depict dancers and the ballet from a realist perspective, but rather from and imaginary viewpoint, as if one were in a romantic landscape of the mind, populated by ballerinas and characters from a commedia del arte, both experiencing the happiness of lovers and the sadness of a clown rejected by his beloved.
