Mary Murphy - Premium Artist

Design and color are most important to me as an artist. Inspiration comes from the designs of the trees I love. Well-shaped ones are beautiful, but I paint the wind-swept ones, the gnarled ones, the ones that show age, for they are the ones that have character and interesting lines. My landscapes are painted en plein air so that I can clearly see the shapes of the trees. The spirit of the location inspires me with the colors.

Artist's Statement
As a young child I lived on a small farm that had a wooded area in a rear corner. I loved the play of the light on the grass, the leaves and trunks of trees, and on the nearby shrubs. I began my art career by studying at The University of Maryland College Park and continued my studies with excellent teachers in Florida, North Carolina and the Eastern Shore or Maryland. When I began painting en plein air, that love for nature came back to me and I paint colorful, somewhat abstract, contemporary oil paintings. I also paint colorful abstracts, usually in acrylics.

My paintings can be found in homes in Maryland, North Carolina, Illinois and California.
