Susan Avishai's abstract paintings and drawings have been evolving over the past few years from her own imperative to abandon the tangible object as reference, and the intellect as critic. Rather, she responds with each new mark or colour on the canvas to those which have come before. What starts randomly turns deliberate. |
Her collage paintings all seem to contain the rounded square or blob, as figure and, or window, singly or in masses. In some they succumb to gravity, in others they repel or attract each other as magnets. What intrigues her is their engagement to each other, and their energy in space. They can appear as webs or primordial soups, bubbles or views of the ground from high above. The imagery is in fact, what the viewer makes of it and she feels the work succeeds when it becomes a dialogue with the viewer.
Avishai was trained in Paris, Montreal, and Toronto. She has had solo shows in Jerusalem, Newton MA, Wellesley MA, Lexington MA, Blacksburg VA, Tequesta FL, Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto, and has participated in juried exhibitions all over North America.
She currently works as a full time painter in downtown Toronto.
