Susan Downing White Artwork

In piece after piece Susan Downing White uses a delicate, feathery touch to reproduce a super-saturated marshland atmosphere, where the misty sky merges with the spongy sub-tropical foliage, which dissolves into the gleaming water below. The almost intangible tone of melancholy that permeates all of Downing-White's work is her forte. It is terribly difficult to translate emotional states as ambiguous as wistfulness into visual art, and Downing-White does it extraordinarily well.

Susan Downing White Artist Statement:
An event of light or weather, a marathon car trip, a strange man on a street corner: Susan Downingthese are some of the things I paint about. I want to describe particular states of mind and matter. The paintings run onto their frames. Sometimes I will attach an object to the frame by means of trompe l'oeil. I paint in a classical manner, which means my subject matter is recognizable, but it also indicates a method of making paintings that depends on a monochromatic base painting followed by colored glazes and solid paint built up in several layers. It's an old, careful method, and suits my desire to pin a mood like a butterfly under glass.

The prints derived from my paintings are of two kinds: those derived from my paintings (the 'fine art prints' or 'giclees'), and those that are entirely composed digitally and printed from digital files ('digital photographs').

Style is linked to my working method: how to apply paint, how to get started, how to choose subject matter. I have read a lot of what other artists have to say about creating art. I particularly like what Leonardo wrote about finding landscape forms in the water stains on a wall or in the patterns of clouds. I keep a loaded camera and a sketchbook with me at all times.
