'I am a contemporary figurative artist who paints primarily from memory. I am not trying to capture a photographic likeness. I see my paintings as visual poems and as a poet constantly adding to his or her vocabulary of words and sounds. I am constantly collecting images, fragments of colour and light, a smile, a tear, a face, a bent figure, a moving cloud, and patterns in the sand—images that become part of my visual memory. And like the poets words, these images form the building blocks to be blended, shaped, manipulated and caressed into a visual poem.' Syra Larkin
