'The allure of symbols lies, for me, in the word 'communication'. My interest in symbols, hieroglyphs and pictographs was sparked after a month long excursion in the American Southwest where symbols abound. The solitude and mystery of places such as Canyon de Chelly and Bandelier spoke volumes. Why did these ancients abandon their sites? What did these ancient cultures attempt to communicate? Why did they feel the need to leave these symbols? What do their pictographs and petroglyphs mean? Do these symbols have a universal meaning? '
'These symbolic and hieroglyphic paintings hold a particular fascination for me and one that I have explored in a myriad of techniques, from acrylic gels to encaustic, to collage, to acrylics on rice paper, to fabric in gesso, and raw canvas, etc. These works are consequently abstract in nature and are not pre-conceived at their inception. The writings and symbols arise unconsciously.'
