Tommy McDonell was told in high school that she couldn't draw and should give up. She continued, however, to doodle, and think art. In her mid fifties, Tommy was determined to see if she could paint. One semester, one of the classes that she taught as an adjunct did not run. And Tommy saw an advertisement at Utrecht on watercolor painting. She took that class. And she continues to take classes.
She no longer lives in New York City but in Pinehurst, NC. She continues to paint and recently won an honorable mention at the Moore Council for the Arts Annual Show 2009.
As a former adjunct of academic writing, Tommy writes a blog on writing and art. She compares learning watercolors, oils, etc., with learning to write. She considers the roles of the teacher in each of these fields. And she continues to paint and to write.
