Artist Statement: I have not chosen the life of an artist, yet my painting has compelled me. It is not an idle infatuation yet an arduous journey. As if someone or something orchestrates the sojourn. I pray this door never closes as through this portal, I have found my peace. |
My adolescent years, found me nestled between two famed artists, Joseph Dawley and Carol 'Glitsch' Burnett in Dallas, Texas. I sat quietly (albeit, at times loudly) for decades of sketches and paintings I would never show. It was not until the end of the 1900s that I would “come out”. I began with the brilliance of acrylics as directed by a very accomplished guide, Steven Breaux I Lafayette, Louisiana. I was inertly directed to oil by various teachers in Laguna Beach and San Juan Capistrano, California and then to my characters through Tom Secrest, a renowned lithographer. Finally, divorced for the third time, fired by a Louisiana law firm and black balled by same - burglarized on the same day... suddenly it would not be spurned. Squared for the duel, I faced it head on with years of solitude in Louisiana, New Mexico and then back to my roots in Texas.
My art is an entry into my own Netherland whose only admission is at the mercy of the brush. Canvas open, the stage is set and the characters are positioned in their roles. It is an alluring enticement with a beckoning that will not be ignored. I begin each piece through conceptualization and then construct through photography, collage and sketches. The stage is set and the actors are directed to their positions. The final destination is only the next visualization.
I share with you, in all my vulnerability, my life. As you embark on this wayfaring with me, I trust you can lose yourself; be courageous with who you are; and in fact, embark on your own adventure through the test of time.
My next body of work has been set out for me. It will be yet another sequel through nudes.
